Botulinum toxin injections (Botox)

Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

What is it?

Botulinum toxin is a medicine used to block nerve endings in small muscles, preventing them from moving.

Its use for aesthetic purposes was discovered by happy accident in the mid-1980s when patients being treated for eye conditions noticed their laughter lines had disappeared.

Today, it is most widely known for its ability to prevent or treat fine lines and wrinkles. It doesn't change the skin itself, but instead reduces the “folding” of the skin caused by repeated facial expressions.

Each time we frown or squint, the muscles beneath the skin pull and crease it. While skin is supple when we are young, repeated movements, sun exposure and other factors can cause these lines to form and deepen over time.

How it works

Botulinum toxin is administered through a series of very small injections into the targeted muscles. The medicine then works by blocking the nerve signals to these muscles, temporarily relaxing them and smoothing the skin above.

The treatment is quick, and while the injections may sting a little, they cause no pain afterward. For those who are more sensitive, an anaesthetic cream can be provided to minimise any discomfort.

What to expect

The consultation: The decision to have this treatment is a very personal one. We believe in providing trusted advice and a robust consent procedure, and we are happy to say no if we don't believe it's the right choice for you. Your confidential, no-obligation consultation is a relaxed and friendly discussion where we will talk through your medical history and specific goals. We will be happy to answer all your questions and help you decide if this is the right option for you. There is no cost or obligation to have any treatment at your aesthetic  consultation.

The procedure: The treatment itself is very easy and can be done in a short office visit. A series of small injections are placed into the specific muscles we have identified during your consultation. You may notice some slight redness around the injection sites, but this typically fades before you even leave the clinic.

Recovery: You can expect to see some initial changes within 2-3 days, with the full benefits becoming visible in approximately 1-2 weeks. The results typically last for 3-4 months. Bruising can occur at the injection sites, especially if you take medications like aspirin or ibuprofen. Some people may also experience a mild, short-lived headache for a day or so after the procedure.

Who is this for?

This treatment is ideal for individuals who are looking for a discreet and non-dramatic way to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

It can be a great way to help with self-esteem and confidence, or a natural extension to a daily skincare regime. It is also an effective treatment for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).
