Nail surgery

A quick and effective solution for painful ingrown nails.

What is it?

Many people suffer from the significant pain and distress caused by ingrown or infected nails. This common problem occurs when the corner or side of a nail grows into the soft flesh of the toe, leading to pain, redness and swelling.

For many, accessing timely nail surgery on the NHS can be challenging. Our clinic offers a fast and effective surgical correction to relieve this painful problem.

How it works

At our clinic, all nail surgery begins with a comprehensive, face-to-face assessment by Dr Richard Gordon.

He has many years of experience treating this type of nail problem within the NHS and can provide a safe and suitable solution.

The procedure is a minor surgical correction performed under a local anaesthetic, which completely numbs the toe so you won’t feel any pain.

The surgery involves removing the problematic part of the nail, and a treatment may be applied to the nail bed to prevent regrowth and ensure a long-term solution.

What to expect

The consultation: Your journey starts with a confidential, no-obligation consultation with Dr Richard Gordon. He will fully assess your nail problem and discuss the best course of action. If you decide not to proceed, you will only be charged for the consultation. If you go ahead with the treatment within six months, the consultation fee will be deducted from the total cost.

The procedure: The procedure typically takes under an hour, with the surgery itself taking just a few minutes. You will be awake for the procedure, and a local anaesthetic will ensure it is completely painless thereafter.

Recovery
: Following the surgery, you will be given initial dressings and aftercare instructions. You should rest with your foot elevated for the first day or two. You may experience some mild pain or soreness once the anaesthetic wears off, which can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers. We provide a follow-up appointment to change your dressing and to ensure you are well-cared for throughout your recovery.

Who is it for?

This service is for anyone troubled by a painful or ingrown nail that has not responded to other treatments.

It is a highly effective, long-term solution for a problem that can significantly impact mobility and quality of life.

FAQs

How is the surgery performed?
  • The surgery is a minor procedure performed under local anaesthetic. This means your toe will be completely numb, and you will not feel any pain during the procedure. The problematic part of the nail is carefully removed to relieve the pressure and pain.

Will the nail grow back?
  • In many cases, a treatment (such as phenol) is applied to the nail bed to prevent the problematic section from growing back, providing a permanent solution. This is a common and effective approach.

What is the recovery like?
  • You will be able to walk after the procedure, but it is recommended to rest with your foot elevated for the first 24-48 hours. The surgical site should be kept clean and dry, and you may need to wear roomy shoes for a few weeks to avoid pressure on the area. The full healing time can vary.
